This wonderful Victoria-based trio, Marc Atkinson lead guitar, Joey
Smith bass, and Chris Frye rhythm guitar, makes fans for life
everywhere they play. Praised for their laid-back humour, captivating
live performances and awe-inspiring instrumental skill, The Marc
Atkinson Trio has reached a remarkable level of musicianship and
creativity.
Acknowledging
Django Reinhardt’s influence (particularly evident in Atkinson’s
blazing but melodic improvisations), the trio also ventures into
musical terrain that the king of gypsy swing never explored, including
flamenco rumba, the nineteenth-century classical music of Chopin,
Brazilian choro music, and Broadway show tunes.
Opening of show by Tim Williams
Tim Willliams (Calgary) First Nick opener, Feb. ‘90
Much more than a blues musician, Tim Williams has played with Moroccan Gnawa master Magid Bekas, Malian Griot Boubacar Traore, Classical Indian mandola artist Snehashish Mozumder, English guitar hero Sir Martin Carthy, and multi-instrument wizard David Lindley. A 2005 release, Passed rough Here includes classic favorites from several older discs. His latest CD, Songster, Musicianer, Music Physicianer was released this year. Imagine, if you can, a front porch where Robert Johnson, Hank Williams, Hula Hattie, Flaco Jimenez and Bob Marley meet often and discover just how much they have in common. Tim’s solo and electric music would fit right in.
