THE 5th CALGARY UNDERGROUND FILM FESTIVAL: OPENING NIGHT AFTER PARTY
Featuring AXIS OF CONVERSATION (CALGARY) / SUPERMARKET (AUSTRALIA)

AXIS OF CONVERSATION (CALGARY)

Axis of Conversation would probably be called 'alternative pop' if the word 'alternative' wasn't synonymous with 'lame.' Its a tug of war between art-rock and sample-based psychedelia, all tied together by a violin, glockenspiel, and velvety vocals.
"Imagine two people speaking. One speaks in samples and drum beats, the other in violins and a hushed voice. They speak of longing, love, and the state of things. This is Axis of Conversation. Singer/guitarist/sample artist Chris dela Torre has built a charming ensemble with violinist Shelly Groves, drummer Matt Doherty, bassist Eric Estor and multi-instrumentalist Gerry Dacanay, and their ghostly EP 'There's Hope For You Yet (just kidding)' has left no listener untouched." - PJL, sledisland.com, June 2007
Around the same time the above was written, Axis of Conversation retreated to a borrowed room. It was a tumultuous time for the band: birth, death and car accidents were among what was being dealt with. They spent two months hiding from daylight, and emerged with 'Delusions of Safety'.
It could be said that the music contained is both melodic and experimental, and touches pop music both at its core and its boundaries. At times, songs are presented in a conventional language. Elsewhere, stolen voices stir below floating guitars. Dirty drumbreaks reconcile with heartbroken strings. And the voice of a French girl is fondled...
SUPERMARKET (AUSTRALIA)

Band Members: Dan Monceaux – music / Emma Sterling – visuals
SUPERMARKET is a performed fusion of original experimental cinema and dynamic electronic music.
While Dan jams out to sequenced beats and collected samples on his retro analogue synthesizers, Emma spends her time shooting and cutting visual material- everything from found footage to original celluloid shot in vintage cameras- scratched, manipulated and projected.
Regular faces on the club and arts circuits in South Australia, the SUPERMARKET team's live show is currently touring Canada and the USA, making a stop at our upcoming The Calgary Underground Film Festival.
