The Nylons are an A'CAPPELLA group founded in 1979 in Toronto, Canada, best known for their covers of The Turtles' "Happy Together", Steam's "Na Na Hey Hey Kiss Him Goodbye", and The Tokens' version of the traditional "The Lion Sleeps Tonight".
The band gained exposure from the mid-1980s syndicated sitcom Throb by singing (with the show's lead actress Diana Canova) the theme to the show. Through this they gained a large gay following - something the band may have actively promoted.
These songs appeared on the band's albums, 1987's Happy Together and 1989's Rockapella; at the time, the Nylons' lineup consisted of Arnold Robinson, Paul Cooper, Marc Connors and Claude Morrison. Cooper retired from the band in 1990, and was replaced by Micah Barnes; Connors died in 1991, having contracted AIDS, and was replaced by Billy Newton-Davis. Garth Mosbaugh (tenor) joined in 1994. In early 2006 Arnold Robinson retired. Tyrone Gabriel became the new bass singer and Gavin Hope returned to the baritone part.
Currently the band's lineup is Morrison (tenor), Tyrone Gabriel (bass), Garth Mosbaugh (tenor), and Gavin Hope (baritone). The group has been criticized for their use of drum tracks, eliminating the true a capella "feel." The band recently has reissued all their albums on CD through Unidisc Music Inc.
